title: greatest story

when they were young, the world had not yet collapsed. it was poised on the edge, not falling but not on safe ground.. just looking at the long fall ahead and waiting for it to happen. the threat of war loomed in the back of everyone's minds like an unpleasant shadow in the corner. but still, they were young, and optimistic, and off to find what life might have in store for them.

he had spent his entire life in teh country until today. all the noise, the concrete, the crowds, the lights, it was being trapped in a giant pinball machine. it was overwhelming. it was mystifying. it was exhilarating. and once he met her--a wide-eyed artist with bold ideas and bold friends, with whom everything was magnificent--once he met her, he knew he would never be the same.

after wandering without direction, she fell in with a group of revolutionaries who felt, as most revolutionaries are prone to do, that the war was wrong, the government was taking over, and the only responsible thing to do was to take the country back by themselves.

things quickly spiraled out of control as the war got worse and worse, and the group more and more radical. when she woke up one morning in a street full of broken glass and empty of people, it was too late. it was too much and it was all for nothing. it was time to go home. sorting through months of male, one letter--starkly white--fell out of the pile. it was dated five weeks prior, and it said in flat terms that he had been lost and presumed dead.

INTERMISSION

bereft of his love, he had volunteered for the most dangerous missions, sure he would never see her again. he seemed to have a cursed good luck until one night, he was captured and taken behind enemy lines.

things seemed the worst they had ever been. he spent some time wondering how this had all happened to him, and then spent some time not thinking at all, waiting for the end. but at some point.. at some point, by some miracle, he remembered her--her smile, her eyes, everything he loved about her. every reason why he was alive. and he knew that this could not be the end--he couldn't die with out her. he had to do all he could to escape, to get back to her. but when he showed up at her door, he was met only by shock and confusion. so much was changed forever.. so much had come between them. and they did not know what was stronger: love, or despair.
